SUMMARY:Marc Alessi - Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe
DESCRIPTION:Marc Alessi will give us an update on the progress at the Tesla Center at Wardenclyffe. \nThe Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe\, also known as Friends of Science East\, Inc.\, a not-for-profit organization incorporated by the State of New York\, was established with the specific purpose of developing a regional science and technology center on eastern Long Island. It is the hope of Friends of Science East\, Inc. to be able to establish this center at the site of the former Peerless Photo plant in Shoreham\, New York. \nThe Science and Technology Center and Museum would be a place dedicated to science education and to introducing visitors to the rich scientific opportunities on Long Island. This center and museum would complement the educational efforts of the schools within this region as well as the community outreach activities of other prominent science institutions. It would also look to provide possible space for fledgling companies engaged in scientific research. \nThe historic significance of the Shoreham site presents a unique opportunity as it contains the only remaining laboratory where Nikola Tesla\, the famous inventor of alternating current electricity and neon lighting\, conducted research. The building which he used as his laboratory was designed by the renowned architect Stanford White in the Italianate style.

SUMMARY:Suffolk Police Commissioner Timothy Sini
DESCRIPTION:At 36\, Timothy Sini is the youngest commissioner in the Suffolk County Police Department’s history. The former Federal Prosecutor has never been a cop\, but longtime officers in the 2\,499-member department are praising Sini for his initiatives and his willingness to listen and learn. \n  \nAgainst the corruption backdrop of his predecessor\, restoring the sense of steady and ethical leadership at the top of the organization was a priority for Sini\, and was at the heart of one of his first tasks as commissioner: interviewing dozens of the department’s brass. \nSini’s signature mark has been his ease interacting with the community\, said Noel DiGerolamo\, president of the powerful Police Benevolent Association. By his staff’s count\, Sini has been to more than 150 community meetings in his short tenure. He started a series of new initiatives in his first year\, from creating a team of officers to take illegal guns off the streets\, resulting in a record 507 seizures in 2016\, to starting a narcotics tip line to allow residents to alert police to drug activity in their neighborhoods. \nSini also made reforms to the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau\, giving it a stronger oversight structure\, adding staff and ensuring cases are closed within six months. In addition\, Sini has helped modernize the department\, Giacalone said — bringing in programs such as the SCPD Shield\, an information-sharing platform that Nassau police and the NYPD have had for more than a decade. Sini also re-established partnerships with the FBI\, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and other federal agencies. \nSini attended American University in Washington\, graduating magna cum laude in 2002. He then got a law degree from Brooklyn Law School\, finishing eighth in his class of 492 students. In 2006\, Sini married Amanda\, a midwife whom he had dated on and off since he was a teenager. The couple has three children. \nSini worked for a pair of corporate law firms in Manhattan and clerked for two federal judges before getting a federal prosecutor’s job in the Southern District of New York in March 2010\, working for Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. There\, he spent 4 1⁄2 years prosecuting gang-related killings and what he said was the first federal prosecution of people selling bath salts\, a designer drug. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Farmingdale State College\, SUNY - John S. Nader\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:John S. Nader\, PhD became the 9th President of Farmingdale State College today and pledged to lead the thriving\, 8\,700-student campus to new areas of achievement and distinction. \n“Farmingdale is indisputably a jewel in the State University of New York system\,” Dr. Nader said. “With robust enrollment\, highly qualified students\, exemplary academic programs with outstanding outcomes\, and new construction\, we are poised to make even more progress and elevate our importance to the region’s students\, businesses\, and communities. It is imperative that Long Islanders learn more about our college’s success in preparing students who can help the region thrive.” \nDr. Nader said particular areas of focus will be shepherding the introduction of the College’s first Master’s degree program\, enhancing the research enterprise\, and ensuring an environment which allows students and faculty to flourish. \nHe plans a 360 Degree Tour to engage the campus\, state and federal legislators\, industry and community leaders\, donors\, and alumni in conversations about making Farmingdale an even greater college. \nFarmingdale has the second-largest undergraduate enrollment among four-year institutions on Long Island (behind Stony Brook University) and is among the most selective colleges in the region. It has been nationally ranked in various surveys on campus safety and least student debt\, and is a pioneer in green technology\, including a model Smart Energy House\, a solar-powered carport\, and alternative-energy research. In addition\, Farmingdale provides solid employment opportunities for graduates who are a force for economic growth. \nDr. Nader had served as Provost at SUNY Delhi since 2009\, directly supervising all academic programs\, as well as the library and learning center\, career and business services\, grants and sponsored programs\, and partnerships with the community colleges and local high schools. From 2012-2013\, he was presider of the SUNY Chief Academic Officers organization. \nInstrumental in developing Delhi’s strategic plan\, he monitored implementation of its smart growth strategy. Dr. Nader focused on expanding selected academic majors\, enhancing online capacity\, and building partnerships with community colleges. He led the College’s program development and academic review process. \nHe also spearheaded the effort to obtaining approval for many new academic programs and was deeply involved in developing a fully online RN to BSN degree at Delhi\, which has received national recognition. The success of that program has led to the creation of other online degrees and the introduction of Delhi’s first graduate degree. \nPreviously\, Dr. Nader was the College’s Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences\, overseeing the introduction of new degree programs in Environmental Studies and Criminal Justice. As both provost and dean\, Dr. Nader focused on promoting student success through improving advisement\, expanding scholarship support\, and promoting community engagement and service learning opportunities for students. \nHe also served as Mayor of the City of Oneonta from 2006-10\, where he worked to successfully revitalize a long-dormant downtown property and guided the creation of a veterans’ memorial walkway. He recently chaired the City’s Charter Revision Committee. He also served a dozen years as an Otsego County legislator and as Chair of the Opportunities for Otsego Board\, where he worked to establish a homeless shelter. \nDr. Nader is an avid sports fan whose family formerly owned a minor league baseball team affiliated with the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers. \nHe possesses a BA in Politics from Ithaca College and an MA and a PhD in Economics from the New School for Social Research.
